The American Bald Eagle

The American Bald Eagle gained initial recognition as our national bird when the Great Seal of the United States was adopted on June 20, 1782.  However, it wasn’t until 1789, when George Washington became our first president, that the American Bald Eagle became the official bird of our country.

The National Emblem Act of 1940 protects the American Bald Eagle.  

President John F. Kennedy wrote:

"The Founding Fathers made an appropriate choice when they selected the bald eagle as the emblem of the nation.  The fierce beauty and proud independence of this great bird aptly symbolizes the strength and freedom of America."

The American Bald Eagle is holding an olive branch in his right talon, and a bundle of thirteen arrows in his left.   The olive branch and arrows denote the power of peace & war, which is exclusively vested in congress.
